The Açorean food is solid and well prepared. Most dishes are served in large portions or family style. Typical dinner main course selections include meat or fish stew, seafood or casseroles. The Açorean breads are outstanding. Be sure to save room for dessert. Be sure to try a Natas and Massa sovada.
The water is safe to drink. There a numerous wonderful red and white wine selections and the local beer (Especial) is very nice. There is a local liquor produced called Aquadente.
Do not leave the island without having some fresh Bolo Lêvedo. It is the perfect breakfast bread!
Please note that many restaurants are closed on Sundays.
